“There's a mother in PICU (儿童重症监护病房) who wants to talk about a kit she received.” the nurse told me. “Something about it made her cry.”
I've been a child life specialist at the Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital since 2000. I help families understand diagnoses and treatment plans and manage the ups and downs that come with caring for a sick child. Tough talks with parents are part of the job, it still makes me feel nervous.
The kit the nurse was talking about were something I had recently introduced to the hospital: Comfort Kit from Guideposts. It was supposed to make a child's experience here easier, not upsetting.
When I came across the kit at a conference, I fell in love with them. A treasure box of items designed not only to entertain kids, but to comfort and inspire them. There are a colouring book, a stress ball, a CD of relaxing music, a hairy star named Sparkle, a journal and much more. I really believed the kit would help kids. I wished I hadn't been mistaken.
At the patient's room in PICU I saw a little girl, sleeping soundly, surrounded by tubes and machines. My eyes met her mother's. The kit was open on her lap and tears were running down her cheeks.
“I'm Shannon. I manage the Child Life Department,” I said. “I'm sorry if the kit upset you. It's a new item ...”
The mother shook her head. “This has been one of the worst days of my life. I felt so scared and alone. Then I was handed this box. I know it's for my daughter, but it's just the comfort I need. I wanted to say thank you.”
With that I knew Comfort Kit belonged here. We've been using them for almost three years now. Each child who's admitted to the hospital receives one. Every day I see kids colouring, journaling, playing with Sparkle.
But as this mom showed me Comfort Kit isn't just for kids. The hope it bring, which_can_be_in_short_supply_in_hospitals_sometimes,_is felt by the whole family.
1.The author introduced Comfort Kit to the hospital to ________.
A.relax nurses B. benefit sick kids
C.comfort parents D. cure kids of diseases
2.Why was the girl's mother crying
A.She couldn't wake her kid.
B.She felt alone and scared.
C.She was moved to tears.
D.She worried about her kid's illness.
3.Which of the following can replace the underlined sentence in the last paragraph
A.There may be lack of hope in hospitals.
B.Comfort Kit is in great need in hospitals.
C.Parents are often in low spirits in hospitals.
D.Medical supplies are not enough in hospitals.
4.What's the author's attitude towards Comfort Kit
A.Disappointed. B.Excited.
C.Nervous. D.Confident.
B
These days I am on my very best behaviour whenever I leave the house. If I am wearing pantyhose(连裤袜), I double check to ensure there is no hole on it. I drive thoughtfully as if I'm being tested for a license. I won't even allow myself to frown when another driver is blocking my path.
My kids have noticed my fear in public. “Why are you looking all around, Mum?” they asked.
“You can't be too careful,” I said. “Every single person around us is hiding one of cellphone cameras. They are glad to catch somebody doing something stupid or embarrassing. Then they'll put it on YouTube and a million people will see. I'm not taking any chance.”
“But I don't think anyone is interested in filming you putting on your lipstick for a YouTube video,” answered one kid.
“Oh, really Don't count me out so quickly.” I said.
Actually, in some cases, I am all for public shaming. For example, I admire the cleverness of the man who put up a website where he posts photos of cars and license numbers of people who occupy two parking spots. And I take secret pleasure in photos of politicians with their fingers in their noses. Throwing light on bad behaviour can rouse the sleepy conscience(良知).
But what about the poor guy who has already had a bad day at work and then loses his temper at a rude store clerk What about the woman whose only crime is a terrible judgment error at the hairdresser Do they deserve to have their images uploaded onto the Internet for all the world to see
None of this is new, of course. Allen Funt pioneered the art of catching people during unguarded moments back in the 1940s with “Candid Camera”. But there's a difference. On “Candid Camera”, people are set up in staged situations, such as riding in a lift that goes sideways. And they must give permission before they enjoy their fifteen minutes of fame. Now_we_are_a_nation_of_Allen_Funts. This can't be a good thing.
5.What is the author like
A.She is poor at driving.
B.She is a very fashionable dresser.
C.She is very cautious about her behaviour.
D.She is sick to death of others' rudeness.
6.What is the author truly afraid of
A.Making mistakes before her kids.
B.Being filmed while doing something stupid.
C.Getting involved in a quarrel with others.
D.Watching videos on YouTube.
7.From the text, the author thinks it good ________.
A.to keep the poor's mistakes secret
B.to download images from the Internet
C.to take pleasure in making funny videos
D.to make the public aware of bad behaviour
8.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest
A.Cellphones make it convenient to catch illegal behaviour.
B.We are permitted to upload images onto the Internet.
C.It was once a fashion to film people in unguarded moments.
D.People can be easily caught in embarrassing moments.
