Unit6 Starting out and Understanding ideas
The ocean waves are getting stronger as a result of climate change, which might cause dangers for coastal cities in the future, according to the latest study published in the scientific journal Nature. Researcher found that waves have increased in strength by 0.41 percent per year since 1948. This change is related to the increasing sea-surface temperature, which is driving sea level to rise and bringing more serious and extreme weather.
“This relationship is important, as it shows that the stronger ocean waves can be a valuable reminder of global warming, carbon dioxide concentration, the global sea level rise and the global surface atmosphere temperature,” said a director of the research at the Environmental Hydraulics Institute at Spain’s University of Cantabria.
The study reveals a long-term and increasing wave energy. The effects of this increase are particularly clear during the storm seasons. A storm was formed in the winter of 2013-2014 in the North Atlantic, which affected the west coast of Europe. “The storm in 2017 in the Caribbean reminded people of the huge economic effects coming from coastal storms,” said the study.
Researchers hope the findings could provide a more complete understanding of the dangers faced by coastal cities in the coming decades. “Our results show that ignoring the changes in wave power and having sea level rise may cause us to think little of climate change, which will result in not enough or poor preparation,” warned the author Fernando J. Mendez, a professor at the University of Cantabria.
The findings may warn governments to better protect the population in the coastal cities and infrastructure(基础设施)such as ports and harbors by building coastal defenses.

A. The rising sea-surface temperature.
B. Coastal cities.
C. More population.
D. More ports and harbors.
3. Which of the following best “reveals” underlined in Paragraph 3 .
A. Affects.
B. Invents.
C. Selects.
D. Shows
4. What is the probable purpose of the study
A. To predict the climate change.
B. To advertise the results.
C. To warn governments and coastal people of the increasing ocean waves.
D. To encourage people in the coastal cities.
Ⅱ.七选五
Floods are one of the most common disasters in the US. Some floods develop slowly. But flash floods(暴洪)can develop quickly, sometimes in just a few minutes and without any signs of rain.
1 It carries rocks and mud and can sweep away most things in its path.
1. If a flood is likely in your area, you should: Listen to the radio or television for information. If there is any possibility of a flash flood, move at once to higher ground. 2
2. If you have time to prepare, you should:Make your home safe by bringing in outdoor furniture. 3 Do not touch any electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
3. If you have to leave your home right away, remember these tips: Do not walk through moving water. 4 If you have to walk in water, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the ground in front of you. 5 If floodwaters rise around your car, give up the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely. Otherwise you and the car can be quickly swept away.
A. Do not drive into flooded areas.
B. Do not wait for instructions to move.
C. Turn off all pieces of electrical equipment.
D. 20 cm of moving water can make you fall.
E. Floods can cause death and loss of treasures.
F. Flash floods often have a dangerous wall of water.
G. Mud left from floodwater can contain chemicals.

根据第一段第一句“The ocean waves are getting stronger as a result of climate change, which might cause dangers for coastal cities in the future according to the latest study published in the scientific journal Nature.(根据发表在科学杂志《自然》上的最新研究,由于气候变化,海浪变得越来越强,这可能在未来给沿海城市带来危险。)”
根据第一段最后一句“This change is related to the increasing sea-surface temperature, which is driving sea level to rise and bringing more serious and extreme weather(这一变化与不断上升的海平面温度有关,这导致海平面上升,并带来更严重和极端的天气。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段“The findings may warm governments to better protect the population in the coastal cities and infrastructure(基础设施)such as ports and harbors by building coastal defenses.(这些发现可能会警告各国政府,通过修建海防设施,更好地保护沿海城市中的人和港口等基础设施。)”
1.F 根据空后的“It carries rocks and mud and can sweep away most things in its path.(它携带着岩石和泥土,可以带走路上的大部分东西。)”
3.C 根据空后的“Do not touch any electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water..(如果你是湿的或站在水里,不要触摸任何电器。)”
4.D 根据空前的“Do not walk through moving water.”
5.A 根据空后的“If floodwaters rise around your car, give up the car and move to higher ground(如果洪水在你的车周围上涨,放弃你的车,移到更高的地方)”可知此处指不要开车去洪水区。故选A。
